AU mediator in Sudan calls for swift prosecution over killings of students

PARIS, France- The African Union (AU) mediator in Sudan Hassan Lebatt has demanded swift prosecution of those liable for the killing of children by Sudan’s security forces at a protest in North Kordofan.

According to reports, thousands of students on Monday took to the streets of several cities to in the country to condemn the shooting death of at least four students. The protest which raises national security concerns emboldened the military in ordering the closure of all schools and universities.

Sources say there remains deep-seated anger in various communities in the country following the killings. Besides, the military is also unpopular and deeply mistrusted despite behind the scenes efforts to try to end the ongoing stalemate.

The AU mediator has responsibility for addressing matters of blatant human rights abuses.

The AU mediator recently urged the ruling military council and the opposition coalition to get back to the negotiating table and sign a constitutional declaration, an issue that they have disagreed over since the overthrow of former President Omar al Bashir.
