CNN Asks Famous African Women to Share Inspiring Quotes From Other African Women

In celebration of International Women’s Day, CNN asked 12 famous African women to share the most inspiring quote they have heard from another famous African woman.

Those questioned included Beninese singer-songwriter, Angelique Kidjo, Nigerian singer-songwriter, Tiwa Savage, Nigerian music producer, DJ Cuppy and Ghanaian film director, Nicole Amarteifio.

CNN claimed that Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai was the most quoted woman with other quotes coming from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Lupita Nyong’o and Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Kidjo shared a touching quote from Maathai: “You cannot enslave a mind that knows itself.”

Savage expressed a quote from Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee: “You can never leave a footprint that will last if you are always walking on tip toes.” She added that she uses this quote in many situations, especially when she is faced with overwhelming or challenging decisions.

DJ Cuppy answered with a quote from Nigerian politician Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala: “I can take hardship. I can sleep on a cold floor anytime, but I can also sleep on a feather bed.” She selected this quote because it not only inspires her but also represents the versatility of African women.

Amarteifio responded with a quote from actress Lupita Nyong’o: “No matter where you’re from your dreams are valid.” She shared that when Nyong’o said those words during her 2014 Oscar acceptance speech, it inspired her immensely.
