Fake drugs are a big problem in Africa – people are dying every day

China selling fake ‘Made in India’ drugs

UNITED KINGDOM—If there is anything harmful that Asia is doing to Africa, it is the production and supply of counterfeit medicine to the continent at large.  These medicines west killing people and others are still suffering because of fake medicines.

These compromised drugs which are sold all over the African continent are made in Asia and imported into Africa.  The scale of the trade is huge in the supply of fake medicine.

That is the vicious reality of the multi-billion dollar a year global trade in counterfeit drugs.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 120,000 people a year die in Africa because of fake anti-malarial drugs alone.

Several medical specialists say even medicines that are substandard – and contain an insufficient dosage, or active ingredients can be deadly and may lead to drug resistance.

While diseases like malaria remain one of the serious killers in Africa, consumption of fake Asian made drugs doubles the number of people who die from preventable conditions.

By some estimates, about a third anti-malarial drug in sub-Saharan Africa are fake. These fake drugs can find their way into pharmacies, clinics and street vendor stalls, or be sold online via unregulated websites while the citizens suffer in his quest. This is why African leaders and counties need to review their customs duties.
