DAKAR (Globe Afrique) – A deadly fight broke out over the weekend between fans of rivals US Ouakam and Stade de Mbour in Senegal that led to police firing tear gas to break it up.

At least eight people were killed in the stampede on Saturday at a soccer stadium in the Senegalese capital Dakar during a match between two local teams, the country’s sports minister said.

Deadly stampedes at soccer matches are common in Africa, where general safety standards are considered to be very low.

In February this year, at least 17 people died and scores were injured in a stampede in a match in Angola when hundreds of supporters stormed the stadium.
