French Military Takes on Islamist militants in Mali

WEST AFRICA–– Report reaching Globe Afrique says the French military has pursued Islamist militants in northern Mali near the fringe with Niger and took 15 militants “out of action” according to a French military spokesman.

Authorities say the operation involved French Mirage jets, attack helicopters and forces on the ground.

However, the military spokesman did not provide specifics on how many of the 15 militants targeted were killed or wounded. Mali is a hub for extremism and Islamist jihadism.  The country’s former colonial power France intervened to thwart an offensive by terrorists that began in 2012.

An estimated 4,000 French troops are stationed in the region as part of Operation Barkhane. The troop is said to be working alongside 10,000 U.N. peacekeepers in Mali.
