Nigeria’s Buhari endorses release of $1b for military equipment

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari meets with Nigeria’s security chiefs

ABUJA, Nigeria––Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday approved the release of $1 billion dollars to purchase military and security equipment for the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the country’s defense minister announced.

Following a meeting between Buhari and his security chiefs, the Minister of Defense Mansur Dan-Ali told reporters at a briefing in Abuja that “President Muhammadu Buhari gave approval for the purchase of more equipment for the military, worth $1 billion.”

While discussing domestic insecurity, Dan-Ali did not provide details on what the equipment would be used for, nor from where the funding would come.

Previous Nigerian governments have used the purchase of military equipment and materials to engage in subtle and pervasive corruption.
