Globe Afrique View – What are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids Leave

There are different compounds in marijuana, however, cannabinoids are the compounds that have a substantial impact on the body. Marijuana has about 85 cannabinoids. The two prominent ones are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). We are all aware of THC. This is the psychoactive part of the plant that gives us that “high”. While THC has medicinal benefits, excessive amounts much can trigger anxiety and paranoia in some —especially with rookie users. CBD is the non-psychoactive part of the marijuana and does not get you high. While it may not be the preferred choice for recreational users, it gives this compound a significant advantage as a preferred medicine since health professionals prefer treatments with minimal side effects.

Cannabinoids activate two types of receptors: CB1 receptors, located within the nervous system, the brain and nerve endings, and CB2 receptors, located within the immune system. THC affects the brain differently from CBD because it interacts with different brain receptors. When you ingest marijuana, attaching itself to cannabinoid receptors activates the THC. Thus, as a result, your reaction time slows and memory and judgment are affected. Because of where CB1 receptors are positioned in the brain, an individual starts to feel high. The medicinal qualities of THC are pain relief, antidepressant, treatment in nausea and vomiting (especially with those going through cancer treatments), PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder) and insomnia.

Unlike THC, CBD interacts with CB2 receptors located in the immune system. As previously stated, it does not get you high. Although it has no psychoactive effects, it appears to improve mood and alleviate pain. CBD has grown in popularity because it is non-psychoactive and has many medicinal qualities. It calms the nervous system and has been very promising as a treatment for many neurological disorders such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, Crohn’s disease. It is very effective as an anti-inflammatory as well.

If you are using cannabis as medicine and you live in a state where medical marijuana is legal, it is always best to consult with a medical professional. There are so many different strains of marijuana with different ratios of THC to CBD it can be very cumbersome. In the United States, CBD products derived from hemp plants are legal if it contains 0% THC. There are so many stores now that are opening with CBD products. It is important to do thorough research before purchasing. My contribution to Globe Afrique is to primarily focus and provide education and reviews on CBD products. As a consumer of CBD, I like to share my experiences and how it provides a better alternative to traditional medicines.
